Frequently Asked Questions

8 common questions answered

What are the known NHTSA recalls for a 2017 Subaru BRZ?
The NHTSA records show 2 recalls related to BRZ/related models in the dataset we reviewed. These entries include an engine valve spring fracture recall and an owners manual correction affecting BRZ models in NHTSA records; both are listed in the agency database. Mike Shaw Subaru in Thornton, CO recommends checking your vehicle VIN to confirm applicability and to schedule service if a recall applies.
How do I check if my 2017 Subaru BRZ has an open recall?
You can check your VIN on NHTSA.gov or bring your VIN to Mike Shaw Subaru and we will check for free. NHTSA’s lookup gives the fastest authoritative answer; our factory-trained technicians will also verify and advise on any required repairs. If you want immediate help, schedule service online and we’ll confirm recalls at arrival.
How much does a 2017 Subaru BRZ recall repair cost?
Manufacturer recall repairs are performed free of charge at an authorized Subaru dealer. For the issues listed in the NHTSA dataset, required parts and labor are covered by the manufacturer; Mike Shaw Subaru completes recall repairs at no cost to the owner. If you need additional non-recall maintenance, ask about our current service specials and service financing options to pay over time.
Can I get my 2017 Subaru BRZ recall fixed at an independent shop or do I need a dealer?
Recall repairs must be completed by a certified dealer to ensure OEM parts and warranty traceability; we strongly recommend a franchise Subaru dealer. Mike Shaw Subaru uses OEM parts, factory diagnostic tools, and factory-trained technicians to perform recall work and document the repair with the manufacturer. For safety and resale protection, book a recall appointment to have repairs recorded properly with Subaru.
How long does a 2017 Subaru BRZ recall repair take?
Turnaround varies by recall type but many recall repairs are completed the same day or within 1–2 days once parts and scheduling are arranged. The engine valve spring replacement or a manual correction may require brief diagnostic time and parts; our service team will provide an estimated completion time when you schedule service. If parts are delayed, we will keep you updated and offer loaner or shuttle options when available.
Does an open recall affect my 2017 Subaru BRZ's trade-in or resale value?
Yes — unresolved recalls can reduce trade-in offers and make buyers or dealers hesitant to purchase without proof of repair. Having recall work completed and documented at Mike Shaw Subaru protects resale and trade-in value; you can also get a free appraisal at our trade-in page. Dealers and private buyers often check NHTSA records before offers, so completing recalls preserves value and buyer confidence.
Can I fail a state inspection because of an unresolved 2017 Subaru BRZ recall?
Some states or inspection stations may flag unresolved safety-related recalls, and unresolved issues can complicate registration or inspections in certain cases. Because a recall may affect essential systems (for example, the engine valve spring issue can cause a stall), resolving recalls at Mike Shaw Subaru helps ensure your vehicle passes inspections and remains legal to operate. Contact our service team if you have inspection concerns and schedule service so we can document repairs and provide the proper paperwork.
