Why Won't the Key Turn in the Ignition?

It usually means getting a new key cut, but keep in mind this is different than simply having a copy made at your local hardware store, since copying a worn-down key may not do much good. Set your parking brake, keep your foot on the brake pedal, and turn the steering wheel back and forth while trying to remove the key. If that doesn't work, put the vehicle in drive with the brakes set as before. Then, quickly shift back to park. Be firm, but not hard enough to break stuff. Often, this will release the safety lock that's keeping the key in the ignition.

What if Your Car Won't Start?

There are many reasons this might happen, and the ignition system is a common culprit. There could be an issue with one or more of the spark plugs, an ignition coil may not be allowing the spark plug to fire, or there could be another issue. Sometimes, problems with the ignition system will turn the check engine light on and help point a technician towards the solution, but not always.
