Drum Brake Shoe Replacement Service in the Denver Metro Area

Modern Subaru vehicles come with front and rear disc brakes; however, this hasn't always been the case. If you have an older Subaru, it may be equipped with drum brakes--and if so, you'll eventually need to have them replaced just like the brake pads on disc brakes. This is a service that the technicians at Mike Shaw Subaru can perform.
Does My Subaru Have Drum Brakes?
If you're not sure whether your older-model Subaru has rear drum brakes or disc brakes, it's easy to take a look and see. Take a look through the front wheels; you should see shiny discs. Now look at the back. Do you see similar discs? If so, your Subaru has rear disc brakes. If you see a dull-colored, drum-like shape, your Subaru has rear drum brakes.
How Should Drum Brakes Be Maintained?
The brake shoes in your drum brakes work similarly to the pads on disc brakes: they create friction to slow down and stop the vehicle. But while disc brakes are relatively quick and easy to replace, it's much trickier to replace drum brakes. There's a good trade-off, though: brake shoes in drum brakes often last longer than the brake pads in disc brakes. How often you'll need them changed will vary, but it will generally fall between every 25,000 miles and every 70,000 miles. Your owner's manual will give you a general idea, but we recommend talking to a service specialist to have the shoes inspected every other oil change, as well.
