What Are CV Axles or Half Shafts?

These are found on just about every modern vehicle, including all-wheel drive vehicles like most Subaru models. The CV axle (or Constant Velocity axle and sometimes called a half shaft) is what sends power to the wheels. On a vehicle's front wheels, these axles must accommodate the up-and-down motion of the wheel as well as the turning of the wheels. To do this, they have a special joint in them that's encased in a grease-filled rubber boot.

What are Some Symptoms of a Bad CV Axle?

The most common reason for a CV axle going bad is that the joint loses the grease that keeps it lubricated. If this is the case, a visual inspection of the CV joint boot should answer the question of whether the axle needs service. This is located behind the wheel. If the boot is ripped, or covered in grease, then you'll want to get it fixed right away. If you catch the problem early enough, simply replacing the boot may be all that's necessary. This is a great example of why you should have frequent multi-point inspections of your vehicle by an expert.

If a bad CV axle isn't caught early by an inspection, you'll most likely hear a rhythmic clicking sound when you turn. This is from the joint that's run out of lubrication. By this time, chances are that the entire CV axle will need to be replaced.
