Do You Need to Use OEM Parts to Maintain the Warranty on Your Subaru?

The simple answer is no--with some important caveats. People often wonder just what they have to do in order to keep the warranty on their Subaru vehicle valid. One of the most frequent questions is: do I need to use OEM parts to maintain the warranty on my Subaru?

Genuine OEM parts--that is, parts made by Subaru or approved by Subaru--are, of course, the best for your vehicle. They're designed to fit perfectly, and they're held to the high standards set by the factory. Aftermarket parts can have a wide range of quality; while some might be similar to OEM parts, they lack the level of certainty you get from factory-approved parts. However, there are times when aftermarket parts may be necessary.
For example, if you need a part immediately and you're far away from a dealership, or the part isn't held in stock. Whatever the reason, using aftermarket parts doesn't automatically void the warranty. However, in order to keep your vehicle performing at its best, it's a good idea to replace the part with an OEM part as soon as possible.

Even though aftermarket parts don't automatically void the warranty, that doesn't mean you should run to the nearest independent parts store and have them install aftermarket parts. Having parts installed at a place other than an authorized Subaru dealership can indeed cause the warranty to be void.

Of course, it's important to remember that the warranty doesn't extend to things like misuse of your vehicle, traffic accidents, neglecting oil changes, and the like. Rather, it covers the cost of parts and labor for factory defects--it's an expression of confidence in the quality of Subaru vehicles.
