2016 Subaru Forester vs 2016 Ford Escape: Design
When it comes to design, the Forester and the Escape are similar; after all, they're both similarly-sized small crossover SUVs. However, the Forester has a better design in several key areas. It has a tighter curb-to-curb turning circle (34.8 rather than the 38.8 of the Escape), for example. It also has more interior space than the Escape: the Forester has 108.3 cubic feet of passenger volume and 34.4 cubic feet of cargo space, while the Escape has 98.1 cubic feet of passenger volume and 34.3 cubic feet of cargo volume. And while the Escape has an impressive 7.9" of ground clearance, the Forester has an even better 8.7"!
2016 Subaru Forester vs 2016 Ford Escape: Performance
The Forester and the Escape have base engines that are both 2.5-liter four-cylinders; however, whereas the Escape has an I4, the Forester has a horizontally opposed Boxer engine that delivers better balance, a lower center of gravity, and a quieter ride. The Boxer engine on the Forester is also more powerful, with 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, compared with the 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque of the Escape. In addition, the Forester is better suited to Colorado driving: every Forester is equipped with symmetrical all-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is available on the Escape, but it's more expensive and less effective.
2016 Subaru Forester vs 2016 Ford Escape: Safety Features
Safety is a top priority, and Subaru excels. When equipped with the available EyeSight driver assist technology, the 2016 Subaru Forester received the highest-possible Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS. The Ford Escape didn't even make the Top Safety Picks list; for one thing, it lacks the front crash protection that the Forester offers. The Forester also received the highest-possible rating of "Good" in all IIHS crashworthiness tests; the Escape managed to get "Good" in most categories, but received the lowest rating of "Poor" in the small overlap front crashworthiness test.
