An overheating engine is not a good thing. If your vehicle's engine is overheating, it could very well end up sustaining massive--and even irreparable--damage. If the engine overheating light in your Subaru turns on, if the temperature gauge gets too high, or if other symptoms present themselves (for example, a burning smell or steam billowing from the hood of your Subaru), it's best to pull over and turn off your engine as soon as you can safely do so. Don't try to start your Subaru again; instead, have it towed to Mike Shaw Subaru. Once it's there, our technicians can see if the engine already sustained any damage. If it's still fixable, they'll be glad to talk to you about giving it the service it needs.

Why Is My Subaru Overheating?
If your vehicle is overheating, chances are it's due to a problem with some part of the cooling system. Combustion is hot--hot enough to melt the engine if not for the help of the cooling system. Once the engine warms up, the thermostat releases coolant (a mixture of water and antifreeze) into the cooling system, where it's circulated by the water pump. It absorbs excess heat, then is sent to the radiator to cool down.Once it's cool, it begins the process of circulating through the engine again.
A problem with any component of the cooling system could keep it from working as well as it should--or even working at all. If this happens, your engine may begin to overheat. But while this is the most likely cause, there are other possible reasons for an overheating engine. A blown head gasket is uncommon, but possible. It could also be that the temperature gauge or sensor could have incorrect information. Whatever the cause, our technicians will be able to diagnose it and recommend the correct course of action.
