The base 2.5i trim includes a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 175 hp and 174 lb-ft. It is paired with a CVT that feeds power to all four wheels. This base trim comes with hill descent control and hill holding assist. Drivers can also choose the 3.6R Limited or 3.6R Touring trim which adds a 3.6-liter engine rated at 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque.

A 2018 update includes a retuning of the CVT for a smoother response. No matter which engine you choose, all Outback models have a smooth ride and car-like steering. The upper level Limited and Touring trims add 18-inch wheels which allow for a firmer ride.
