General Requirements for Donating Blood at Children's Colorado
- Be in good general health
- Be at least 17 years old (with parental consent) ? 18 years & older don't need parental consent?
- Weigh at least 110 pounds
- Have no history of HIV/AIDS
- Have not had a tattoo or body piercing in the past 12 months
- Have not traveled to a malarial risk area in the past 12 months
Some common deferral reasons
- Travel to malaria risk areas in the past 12 months ? these may include ? but are not limited to ? Mexico, South America, and Asia
- Military service or living in areas of Europe during the 80's
- Time spent in the Middle East in the last 12 months
- Some medications ? please check with the Donor Center for specifics
- Cough, cold, runny nose, flu-like symptoms
Children's Colorado adheres to strict, federally regulated safety guidelines. To protect the safety of both donors and recipients, a volunteer blood donor may be deferred if their medical history includes any of the following:
- Blood disease

- Some forms of cancer
- Hepatitis or Yellow Jaundice
- Kidney or liver disease
- Some heart disease
- Intravenous drug use
- Risk behavior for AIDS
